Germany - Increasing the number of teachers and trainers in further training

The great emphasis on cooperation between schools and companies in the German initial VET system also applies to the further training of teachers. To strengthen the cooperation between companies and schools in Hesse:

•    VET teachers are able to work in a company for two weeks to understand their students’ experiences. This helps teachers to prepare their students for the work-based phase of their apprenticeship. It also allows VET teachers to include examples from business or industry in their lessons;

•    VET teachers can participate in further education courses at the chambers of industry and commerce, the chambers of skilled crafts, trade organisations or companies. Some of these courses are offered free of charge to teachers. VET schools also have a budget to support teachers in this type of activity;

•    Hesse also offers VET teachers a choice of further education courses. Vocationally-specific training courses keep teachers and company-based instructors up to date about new developments in their field.

Sometimes the training take place in companies e.g. in the field of systems engineering or printing technology. In other areas the training is led by the chambers of industry and commerce, the chambers of skilled crafts, VET schools or companies. These courses often take place in the VET schools.
