Criterion referenced assessment

Definition 1:  Assessment that test students’ knowledge or skill against a pre-defined standard of performance, target, desirable performance, benchmark, or criterion. In education, CRAs usually are made to determine whether a student has mastered the material taught in a specific grade or course.

Definition 2:  In the context of assessment, determining a grade (in the case of graded assessment) or making a judgement of competency (in the case of competency-based assessment) with strict reference to predetermined learning standards or criteria. Criterion referencing may be contrasted with norm referencing.
